Research and Markets: North American Development Survey 2011 v.2 - Developers Embrace HTML5 - Three-Quarters Use Or Expect To Use - New Survey Shows

Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/v2tg9s/north_american_dev) has announced the addition of the "North American Development Survey 2011 v.2" report to their offering.

This series started in the Winter of 1998 and is the most comprehensive research survey series in existence focused exclusively on developers and IT managers. In this survey, we examine the changing face of Operating platforms; Languages including particular emphasis on Scripting Languages; Web Services and Service Oriented Architectures with deeper drill-down for Software as a Service and Cloud Computing, highlighting trend updates and significant changes.

This series explores: global demographics, platform use and migrations, language use, internal and external cloud computing, SaaS, SOA, security, Linux and open source software, Java development, general internet development, architecture and technology adoption, software development requirements, development tools, development issues and application management.

Conducted biannually, 490 respondents

Even though the HTML5 standard is still a work in progress, software developers are already committed to it, Evans Data's newest Global Development Survey shows. The survey of over 1200 developers conducted worldwide in November/December showed current use of HTML5 at 43% in North America, 39% in EMEA and a huge 58% in the APAC region. Adding in planned use brought the totals to over three-quarters across the regions.

"There isn't any question about the adoption of HTML5, it's already the de facto standard" said Janel Garvin, CEO of Evans Data, "There is especial strength in HTML5 for mobile and cross-platform mobile apps, which is the direction the industry is moving for client devices, and that has made it extremely attractive to developers everywhere in the world. We see the most strength in Asia, a region that is generally quick to adopt new technologies."

The survey also showed that developers are more likely to use a standalone HTML5 editor in APAC and EMEA, though North Americans prefer to use the editor in their IDE. When asked about importance in the development cycle, HTML5 came in 20% higher on average across regions than either Flash or Silverlight.
